One of the easiest mistakes in financial research is to compare two numbers because they share a familiar label. A market-data API makes retrieval quick; it does not make every provider’s methodology identical.

Five checks before comparing

1. Confirm the metric definition

Gross margin, operating margin, net profit margin, and free-cash-flow margin answer different questions. Keep the exact field name and its provider documentation with the value.

2. Match the time window

A quarterly ratio, annual ratio, and trailing-twelve-month ratio can diverge even when each is calculated correctly. The MSFT example returned Alpha Vantage trailing-twelve-month operating margin and Finnhub annual and quarterly margin series. Those are not like-for-like observations.

3. Check the period end date

Record the fiscal period, not only the date you made the API request. Here the providers reported a latest quarter ending June 30, 2026. Later data refreshes may revise or extend the series.

4. Keep units explicit

Some APIs represent margins as decimals (0.451); others may return percentages (45.1). Revenue can be reported in dollars, thousands, or millions. Check the schema and value scale before formatting.

5. Preserve provenance

Save the provider, tool or endpoint, symbol, input parameters, retrieval time, and relevant response fields. Muxo’s read calls create receipts that help connect a result to its execution record.

A cross-provider difference is a prompt to investigate. It is not proof that one provider is wrong.

Responsible publishing

For public-facing research, cite the data provider and retrieval date, explain material calculations, and verify redistribution rights. Treat API snapshots as inputs to analysis rather than as investment advice. Historical metrics cannot promise future performance.

Method example: MSFT data retrieved through Muxo from Alpha Vantage Company Overview and Finnhub Company Financial Metrics on 28 October 2026. This note focuses on interpretation and does not reproduce all provider values.
